Day Challenges

The aim of a Day Challenge is to give you a first a taste of sailing.

Enjoy learning a new skill and chat with others who have MS. A day sail is an opportunity to become aware of the basics of sailing or to brush up on skills that you may already have. It’s a chance to experience the benefits of sailing without committing to a longer time away from home or a more testing challenge.

Our Portsmouth days offer sailing experience for all abilities. We have access to Sun Odyssey’s which are regular sailboats, and the fully accessible catamaran ‘Spirit of Scott Bader’.

A first step to new possibilities… whatever your ability or experience, these challenges are a really good way of safely getting out on the water.

What To Expect

Lets go sailing! When sailing from Port Solent we will have a chance to see the historic town and Harbour from the water. We will then put the sails up and spend a few hours under sail in the Solent. We may even get over to the Isle of Wight! Our captains are very experienced and have first-hand understanding of MS.

The day will offer plenty of opportunities:

  • Steering the boat
  • Understanding how wind makes the boat move.
  • How the boat moves through the water
  • Parts of the boat, what they are called and how they work
  • Basic rope work

Don’t forget to bring warm clothes and something for lunch.
Waterproofs and life jackets are provided. All boats have toilets on board.
There is plenty of parking on site as well as disabled access toilets. Access to the pontoons is via ramp.

We kindly ask for a small reserve fee to guarantee a place on our events: £25 for the wheelchair accessible boat and £35 for the yacht.  The fee may, on request, be returned to each participant after the event. This helps us to better manage late cancellations and enable as many places as possible.

Approx timing: 10:30 -16:00

Our main base for day sailing activities is Port Solent Marina, Portsmouth.

Arrival time: 10:30 – 11:00

You will be met by an Oceans of Hope Volunteer and taken to your boat. There will be plenty of time to meet other participants and chat over a cuppa.
